One main problem that can arise from water being left in the water tank of your air compressor is rust. Obviously, rust likes to form anywhere where there is water, and leaving water in your tank could very easily cause it to happen. Once even the smallest amount of rust forms in your tank, you are going to have problems. The rust will slowly start to spread and can cause the tank to actually corrode, which could cause a leak. Dealing with the rust will be difficult, and you might even have to replace the tank completely. Therefore, it's best to dump out the water and prevent the rust from forming in the first place.
2. Mildew Could Form
Another potential problem that you have to worry about when leaving water in your air compressor tank is mildew. As you probably already know, mildew can easily form when it's warm and moist, just like the conditions in your tank if the water is not emptied out. The mildew can cause contamination and can continue to grow, and it can take a lot of work to try to clean it out.
3. An Odor Could Surface
Stagnant water in your air compressor tank can begin to take on a very unpleasant odor over time. This can make for an unpleasant work environment, and once the smell is there, it is difficult to get rid of.
As you can see, it really is smart to clean the water tank of your air compressor. Get in the habit of doing it at least once per day -- generally at the end of the work day, when you won't be using your air compressor any more -- and you can avoid these problems and more.
